This native of South Africa would feel right at home amongst other tropical-looking plants. Big, bold leaves, each reaching a foot (30cm) long or more, sprout from bulbs each spring. Then, in mid to late summer, thick flowers spikes composed of many half inch (1.25cm),pinkish- purple blossoms rise from the foliage, each with a prominent yellow stamen, and topped with a cluster of leaves that look a bit like the leaves on the top of a pineapple. The seed pods that follow the flowers carry the show well into the fall. White-flowered, as well as purple-leaved varieties are also available. Pineapple lilies make for interesting cut flowers.
