The lily is an ancient plant that has had extensive religious and cultural significance throughout history. There are countless hybrids, groups, varieties, colors, of true lilies available; so much so that these five don’t even scratch the surface. By the way, by “true lily,” I mean plants that have “lilium” as their botanical name. There are many “imposters” with Lily in their common name, such as Calla Lily, Water Lily, Lily of the Valley, etc.

These five are all from a group of lilies that are a cross between lilium longiflorum (Easter Lily) and asiatic lilies, and are a part of a group labeled “other hybrids” or group VIII. They all have large, showy, often fragrant blooms on 2-3ft (60-90cm) stalks. They will spread to 12-18in (30-45cm) wide. They are at home in borders or containers, and make terrific cut flowers.

Cheers

John
