Akebia quinata “Shirobana”

First, a word of caution. This vine, although not on any invasive species lists around here,  is quite aggressive in warmer climates and can be problematic if allowed to wander. It is, however, widely available at many garden centres, so just be aware that even here in Victoria BC it’s a VERY vigorous grower.

OK, on to the good stuff. Light green leaflets in groups of 5 cover twining vines that will reach between 15-30 ft (4.5-9m), The leaves darken as they mature. Dangling clusters of smallish wine red flowers appear in the spring. They supposedly smell like chocolate (hence the name) or vanilla, but I don’t notice the resemblance. They are subtly pleasant-smelling, though, and not overly sweet, but it’s grown more for the foliage than the floral show. Fruit are sort of bizarre-looking purple sausage-shaped things, but appear rarely, if at all. The cultivar Akebia quinata “Shirobana” has white flowers instead.
