Here’s a variegated variety of an old gardener’s favorite. This weigela grows 4-6ft (1.2-1.8m) tall and wide, producing an upright shrub with stiff branches. Leaves are medium green, edged with creamy white. Profuse, 1in (2.5cm), funnel shaped flowers that range in color from nearly pure white through pink to rosy red appear in May for a magnificent show of color. It makes a good plant for the back of borders, and for screening during the summer. Pruning will keep it from getting leggy, which they are prone to do as they mature, especially in shadier spots. Weigela florida “versicolor” (pictured above) has blossoms in red, pink, yellow, cream and white, often on the same branch.

Pro tip: This is actually pronounced “Wye-guh-lah,” but lots of people modify it a bit and add a syllable: wye-GEE-lee-ah. I guess it sort of rolls off the tongue better. Both seem to be acceptable.
