This striking, dense, evergreen shrub is a fast grower when it’s young, which qualifies it as an excellent screening plant. Reaching 10ft (3m) tall and wide, this cultivar is prized for its rich, dark green leaves with striking, uneven yellow margins. New leaves have silvery scales on their surfaces which make them appear to sparkle. These disappear as the leaves mature. Insignificant, silvery flowers hide amongst the leaves in autumn, but are given away by their scent. As mentioned, this versatile shrub can be used for screening or in a hedge, but it’s also valued as an accent plant, or as a bright participant in a mixed border.
