Ruscus aculeatus |
Butcher’s Broom
Ruscus Aculeatus
Type: Evergreen Shrub
Exposure: Sun / Shade
Water: Regular to Drought Tolerant
This evergreen shrub or sub-shrub features pointy, dark green foliage borne on 4ft (1.2m) tall, arching green stems. The “leaves” are really cladodes which are actually flattened stems that look like leaves. These are leathery, and will get about 3 inches (7.5cm) long by a third of that wide. Bright red berries are produced in fall, as long as there is a male and female plant present, or female flowers on a male plant. It works well in woodland settings, and is spread by seed distribution and rhizomes. Bucher’s Broom has long been used in folk medicine, and is currently being considered for the treatment of orthostatic hypotension.
It has been known to cause stomach upset though, so please; don’t eat your butcher’s broom.
Cheers,
John
