Fountain Grass
Pennisetum alopecuroides “Hameln”
Type: Perennial Ornamental Grass
Exposure: Sun / Part Shade
Water: Regular

Forming a clump of bright green arching leaves that reaches 18 to 30in (45-75cm) high and wide, this perennial grass works great in groups, and provides an effective textural contrast in rock gardens. The foliage turns orangey-bronze in fall, and then to more a buff color through winter. In late summer, silvery flowers, sometimes with a slight pinkish tinge appear at the ends of outward-arching (like a fountain) stems. These look a bit like a wheat flower and darken to a brownish hue as they ripen, persisting through the winter. These are popular and effective as cut flowers.

“Hameln” is a more compact cultivar than the species. Other varieties that are larger with a more open habit are also widely available.

Cheers,

John
