Schizostylus coccinea |
Crimson Flag
Schizostylus coccinea (also Hesperantha coccinea)
Type: Perennial
Exposure: Full Sun / Light Shade
Water: Regular to Ample
Growing from rhizomes, this late bloomer starts out with upright, grasslike foliage, forming clumps that rise 2ft (60cm) tall by half as wide. Late summer brings 2in (5cm) wide 6-petaled cup shaped crimson flowers which persist through autumn. These beautiful blooms are great as cut flowers and as such are popular with florists. Various color variations are available, and they do great in containers.
Fun Fact: This used to be called Kaffir Lily, until someone figured out that “Kaffir” is a racial slur in Africa. Oopsy.
Cheers,
John
