Type: Perennial
Exposure: Full Sun / Light Shade
Water: Regular

An old gardener’s favorite, Summer Phlox is now available in almost any color you can think of, as well as some with a contasting-colored eye (see photos). Growing as tall as 5ft (1.5m) and 2ft (60cm) wide, this is the tallest of the phlox family; others have a more prostrate form. The foliage is narrow, pointed, and medium green. The flowers are 1in (2.5cm) across, and are arranged in rounded domes above the foliage. They smell terrific. Although they thrive in full sun, excessive heat can bleach the flower colors a bit; for this reason they tend to perform better here in the cooler Pacific Northwest. Situate them near the back of a border, but ensure that they aren’t overcrowded, as mildew can be a problem if they don’t have proper air circulation.

Cheers,

John
