This native of the Mediterranean forms clumps of large, leathery, dark green basal leaves up to 1 foot (30cm) wide. Papery-looking flowers in shades of white, pink, yellow, orange and purple, are held above the foliage on mainly leafless stems with many branches, to a height of about 18in (45cm). Often the outer part of the flower (the calyx) is a completely different color from the center (corona). Statice are grown widely for use as cut or dried flowers, due partly to their ability to hold their color long after they’re cut. And they will self-sow, so they work well for naturalizing.

John
