Joe Pye Weed

Eutrochium purpureum

Joe Pye Weed
Eutrochium purpureum (formerly Eupatorium purpureum)
Type: Perennial
Exposure: Sun / Part Shade
Water: Regular to Ample

This big, impressive plant is a relative of the sunflower, and is native to much of the eastern US. At home in meadow settings and perennial borders, it creates a bold statement with hollow stems that can reach a whopping 9ft (2.7m) tall, and forming a clump up to 3ft (90cm) wide. Toothed leaves that can reach up to a foot (30cm) long line these stems, and smell a bit like vanilla when bruised. Large clusters of pinkish purple, frothy-looking flowers are rich in nectar, and appear in mid- to late summer or fall.

Fun Fact: The name “Joe Pye Weed” is derived from “Jopi,” the name of a native healer who used the plant extensively for medicines.

Cheers,

John
