Montbretia is an old garden favorite that’s making a comeback. Vertical, blade-like leaves form a clump of medium green foliage that will rise to 3 feet (90cm) tall, each being up to an inch (2.5cm) wide. From this strongly vertical clump rises branched, arching flower stalks which suspend brilliant red blooms up to 4ft (1.2m) high. These summer-blooming blossoms, favored by birds, open from yellow and red buds along the top of the curving stem, and can reach 2 inches long. Hybrids featuring other flower and foliage colors are also available; all make superb cut flowers.
