Here’s an entry for the Not-Everybody-Has-One file. Growing from creeping rhizomes, this Japanese native forms an attractive mound of distinctive, finely-cut, glossy green leaves with serrated edges, and will spread to about 3ft (90cm) wide. Long, arching flower spikes reaching 3ft (90cm) high or more produce buds in the spring that resemble the catkins on a birch tree. These buds open to form nodding, white, bottlebrush-type blossoms with very tiny, dark-colored dots sprinkled over the flower’s surface. All in all, it makes for a graceful and unique addition to a perennial planting.

Cheers,

John
