Today’s plant rivals the Black Elderberry for dramatic, purple-black foliage. Quickly reaching a height and spread of 10ft (3m), it makes a great foil for virtually any other color of foliage or flowers, with its mass of dark, maple-shaped leaves. Late spring sees the arrival of round red buds in tight clusters that open into white, five petalled flowers. The fall foliage tends toward a burgundy-bronze in the fall before its departure in November, revealing interesting peeling bark. In fact, it’s the bark’s habit of exfoliating in many layers that gives it its common name. Its vigorous growth and dense foliage would make it well suited to an informal hedge.

Cheers,

John
