This deciduous hybrid clematis is a compact grower as clematis go, growing not much larger than 8 ft (2.4m) tall. The large (6in, 15cm) flowers are 6-petalled, with a bit of waviness or ruffles along the edges. These luxuriously wine-colored blooms are complimented by pink or purple sepals. These are prolific bloomers, producing a flush of flowers in June-July, and then again in August or September.

Like the one in the picture, these smaller clematis are ideally suited for growing into other, larger shrubs. The subtlety in this combination is worth commenting on, though. This Huvi has been grown up into a Smoke Bush (cotinus; more on these later), that features a foliage color quite close to that of the clematis’ blooms. The result is that of hidden treasure, because a casual glance could miss the camouflaged, “plant-within-a-plant”  effect of this combination. It’s almost like the visual is more satisfying because you have to work for it a bit.
