Water: Regular

Here’s a bright, vigorous groundcover that is a good choice for naturalizing at forest margins, covering lesser-maintained areas or for growing in pots. The reason for this is its enthusiastic growth habit. Reaching only 6in (15cm) high, but spreading rapidly to 2ft (60cm) or more (per plant), rooting as it goes, it’s considered by many to be invasive. But as long as it’s maintained, or put somewhere that it can do its thing (such as a hanging basket or a wall that it can spill over) it will quickly add a splash of color with its uber glossy, almost liquid-looking chartreuse leaves. Yellow flowers appear at leaf joints, but are unremarkable due to lack of contrast with the leaves; in other words, it’s mainly a foliage plant. It is very striking when paired with darker leaved plants, such as the Ajuga reptans (see April 27) shown above.

Cheers,

John
