Black Elder

Sambucus nigra “Black Beauty”

Black Elder
Sambucus nigra “Black Beauty”
Type: Deciduous Shrub or Small Tree
Exposure: Sun / Part Shade
Water: Regular

The leaves of this large shrub are such a deep purple that they’re almost black. Each of these leaves are 10in (25cm) long, divided into pointed oval leaflets. The shrub itself will grow to 10ft (3m) high and wide, sometimes taller. In late spring, pink buds open into flat clusters of tiny white flowers that can measure 8in (20cm) across, and stand out strikingly against the dark background of the leaves. These flowers are said to have a citrusy fragrance, but I’ve never experienced that personally. They give way to clusters of purple / black berries that are bitter but edible if the birds don’t beat you to them. They are popular for use in preserves and wine.

Cheers,

John
