Sweetshrub, Spice Bush
Calycanthus x raulstonii “Hartlage Wine”
Type: Deciduous Shrub
Exposure: Sun / Part Shade
Water: Regular

This vigorous shrub, that is a relative of Carolina Allspice, grows to 8 ft (2.4m) tall by 6 ft (1.8m) wide and features glossy bright green leaves that turn a soft yellow in the fall. Handsome, wine colored, slightly fragrant flowers that reach 4 in (10cm) across adorn the shrub from mid-spring to mid summer. They look a bit like Magnolia blooms. It’s best in dappled shade in a woodland setting. This is a brand new cultivar, so it might be a bit tough to find. If so try an alternative botanical name: x sinocalycalycarpus raulstonii “Hartlage Wine;” apparently the plant scientists are still at odds over the name. Silly scientists.

Cheers,

John
