Buddlejas (pronounced BUD-lee-ahs) are a group of upright growing, vase-shaped shrubs, known for their ability to attract butterflies and bees. In fact, the cover photo for Plant-a-Day’s facebook page features a butterfly parked on a big purple buddleja blossom. Today’s plant shares the same open, upright habit, but features very different flowers.

With the Orange Butterfly Bush, the blooms are 3/4in (2cm),perfectly round, bright orange balls that are arranged in 6-8in (15-20cm) long flower spikes, and arrive in late spring. Dark green leaves that are felty on their undersides line branches that can reach 10-15ft (3-4.5m) high and wide. Prune right after bloom by cutting the oldest wood back to just above ground level. Oh, and it needs well-drained soil to be truly happy.

Cheers,

John
