Chilean Fire Tree

Embothrium coccineum

Chilean Fire Tree
Embothrium coccineum
Type: Semi- Evergreen to Evergreen Tree or Large Shrub
Exposure: Full Sun / Light Shade
Water: Regular

Here in the warmer coastal parts of southern British Columbia, this large shrub or small multi-trunked tree will hold on to its glossy, dark, bluish-green leaves all year. The show really starts in late April or May, when stunning blossoms in the form of clusters of fiery red ribbons cover the plant and establish itself as the focal point of any planting. These will last into or through June as a rule, attracting hummingbirds by the score. It will reach 20 ft (6 m) high by half as wide eventually, but may be slow to get started. It tends to prefer spots protected from the wind.

Cheers,

John
