The Star Magnolia’s name refers to the star-shaped, slightly fragrant flowers that cover the bare branches in early spring. Each flower has at least 12 slender petal-like tepals; some types have more than 30. New leaves appear bronzy-green in spring before becoming medium green, then yellow in the fall. It will grow to 10 ft (3m) high by 20ft (6m) wide. M. S. “Pink Star” has (you guessed it) pink flowers.
