This is a variety of “species” tulip, which means it is closer to a wild tulip than the larger, commercially grown varieties. A big plus with species tulips is that they can be left in place to colonize year after year, giving you more “bang for the buck,” as it were. The greyish-green leaves begin to poke through the ground in midwinter, ultimately reaching 6 in (15cm) long. Star-shaped flowers are borne singly on 6-8 in (15-20 cm) high stalks and can reach 4in (10 cm) across. They open to reveal lilac-colored petals with a dramatic, egg-yolk colored splotch of color in the center. It can take cold, but doesn’t require it for a good floral display, so it’s well suited to our coastal climate.
Cheers,
John
