It would seem that this not-so-common plant has quite the assortment of common names. And although it isn’t actually in the Witch Hazel (Hamamelis) family, it is a relative, as is evidenced by the maroon-red tassel-like blooms in the spring. The rest of the year, distylium is a low arching mound of evergreen blue-green foliage on layered branches, 3-4 ft (90-120 cm) tall by 6-8 ft (180-240 cm) wide. The new growth is a vibrant bright green. Black fruit arrives in the fall. It is well suited to woodland settings.

Cheers,

John
