Black Diamond Lenten Rose
Helleborus x hybridus “Black Diamond”
Type: Evergreen Perennial
Exposure: Partial to Full Shade
Water: Regular
This particular hellebore is part of a group of hellebores called “Winter Jewels,” which is known collectively for their abundant, colorful blooms and their easiness to grow. Forming clumps to 18in (45cm) high by at least as wide, the glossy leaves of this guy start out a purple color when they emerge in mid-winter, and mature to a glossy deep green. Early Spring (in fact, right around the Christian observance of Lent, which gives it its common name) sees the emergence of striking, dusty, midnight purple to black, cup-shaped blossoms that can reach 2.5in (6.5 cm). These, like most hellebores, tend to nod downward, and are accented by contrasting light yellow stamens. Note: Hellebores dislike being moved, so try to plant it where it can stay for the long term.
The last photo shows a rather effective companion planting with a Choisya ternata “Sundance,” whose brilliant chartreuse new foliage provides a striking backdrop to Black Diamond’s dramatic near-black blossoms.
By the way, hellebores are toxic. So please…don’t eat your hellebores.
Cheers,
John
