Azaras can be slow growing at first, but they speed up once they’re established, reaching a mature height of 12 – 18 ft (3.6 – 5.4m) with a width of 8 – 12ft (2.4 – 3.6m). The branches are clothed in flat rows of roundish, glossy leaves that resemble those of a boxwood (hence the name) that stay with the plant all year. In late winter, tiny fragrant yellow blooms appear. Some people think the blooms smell like chocolate; others, vanilla. Its flat branching habit makes it a good candidate for espalier.

Cheers,

John
