Helleborus niger “Josef Lempur”
Type: Evergreen Perennial

One more Christmas post, then we’re done ’till next year.
The Christmas Rose, so named because of its late December bloom time, is a handsome, reliable, long blooming perennial. Forming a mound of dark green, toothed, multilobed, leathery foliage 1ft (30cm) tall by 18in (45cm) wide, hellebores are especially attractive as understory planting beneath trees or evergreen shrubs, as well for planting against east and north-facing walls. The blooms on this cultivar are white, cup-shaped blooms 2in (5cm) wide, held on sturdy stems at about the same height as the foliage, and are borne singly or in clusters of 2 or 3. A ring of prominent yellow stamens decorate each blossom. The flowers are prolific, long-lasting and turn pinkish as they age. These are great in plantings with other shade- lovers such as ferns and hostas, and work well in containers.
Cheers,
John
