Want a huge impact from a tiny plant? Step right up. With nearly pure black leaves, Black Mondo Grass makes a unique accent plant for the front of borders, contrasting dramatically with lighter-colored or variegated foliage. Although a bit slow to establish, it will form an evergreen (everblack?) clump 4-6in (10-15cm) high by 10-12in (25-30cm) wide. In summertime, short spikes of pale pink to white flowers appear, followed by black berries in the fall. Also, its diminutive size make it a natural for container plantings. A Green Mondo Grass, which combines well with the black, is also available (see photo).

Here’s some homework: Go back and look at the Midwinter Fire Dogwood. Now, close your eyes and imagine the Dogwood underplanted with Black Mondo Grass…Wow, right?

Cheers,

John
