True to its name, this is the iconic magnolia that is native to the deep south of the US. Growing eventually to a handsome specimen as large as 80ft (24m) tall and 50ft (15m) wide in its native habitat, it’s prized for large, glossy, dark green leaves and huge, white, fragrant blooms. Although undeniably at its showy best during bloom in the late spring, I wanted to show how good-looking it is all year, at least here in Victoria BC (zone USDA 8); the foliage and seed pod photos were taken at the end of November. Spreading as it matures, the rounded crown consists of dense leathery foliage, with each leaf being glossy green on top, downy-gray or tan underneath. These can each reach 10in (25cm) long. The white flowers can get as large as the leaves (or larger; “grandiflora” means “large flower”) and are usually 6-petaled. The flowers give rise to seed clusters which can get as large as 5in (13cm), and swell to reveal red seeds which separate from the pods and fall in autumn. It makes a beautiful, large flowering tree.
