Water: Regular

This giant grass from China can reach a towering 30ft (9m) tall. The first evergreen oriental bamboo to be made commercially available, Black bamboo starts out green, and then gradually turns various earth tones on its way to becoming jet black after a couple of seasons. The graceful, slightly arching canes will max out at about 2in (5cm) thick; they tend to arch more in shady conditions. Triangular, bright green leaves contrast well with the black canes, and will grow to 2-5in (5-13cm). Its dense growth makes it an excellent choice for a natural screen.

There are clumping types of bamboo, which will not spread by underground runners… but this is not one of those. Black bamboo will spread aggressively if given the chance, talking over everything in its path. However, it’s relatively easy to prevent this by installing a vertical root barrier at planting time. This can be made from sheet aluminum (such as flashing) or can be one of many commercial plastic products made for this purpose. It should be buried to a minimum depth of 18in: 24 is better. If installed properly it works like a charm.

Cheers,

John
