Artemesia abrotanum

Southernwood, Old Man
Artemesia abrotanum
Type: Perennial, Herb
Exposure: Full Sun
Water: Regular to Drought Tolerant

Artemesias are shrubby perennial plants that have been used as a herb since ancient times. This one forms a mound of lacy, blue-green foliage that will reach 3ft (90cm) high and wide, and give off a light, citrus-y, camphor-like fragrance when bruised. A natural in a herb garden, it works well in the company of other herbs that enjoy a hot, dry location, such as lavender, rosemary and sage. Although the flowers are insignificant, the blue-tinged leaves will last well into fall before turning shades of yellow to bronze. It works well in a container situated close enough to a traffic area so that its fragrance can be enjoyed by passers-by.
