Type: Evergreen Shrub
Exposure: Sun / Part Shade
Water: Regular

This evergreen native of China and Japan features dense, rich purple foliage that matures to deep olive green. This is carried on layers of drooping branches, and can reach 10ft (3m) tall and wide in ideal conditions. Blooms consist of four 1in (2.5cm) twisted, drooping magenta petals that appear at the tips of the branches (see the third photo). The heaviest bloom is in the spring, but can also be sporadic throughout the year. The green-leaved variety of this shrub has light green leaves except for the occasional randomly occurring red or yellow one, and white to greenish flowers. It looks great in a woodland setting.
