Pink Pagoda Mountain Ash
Sorbus hupuhensis “Pink Pagoda”
Type: Deciduous Flowering Tree
Exposure: Full Sun / Light Shade
Water: Regular
Mountain Ash, or Rowan as it’s sometimes called, is considered an ideal tree for residential sites, thanks to its relatively fast growth but compact habit. Reaching only 25ft (7.5m) tall by half as wide in maturity, the Pink Pagoda is no exception. Late spring brings profuse clusters of white blossoms. These are followed by unique pink berries which appear in summer and last through the summer and fall into winter, sticking around to decorate the bare branches. They also contrast well with the leaves, which are green with a bluish tinge and arranged in opposing pairs of leaflets, with around 11 leaflets per leaf. Make sure that your Mountain Ash has well-drained soil to grow in; they dislike wet feet. Also they can be short lived by comparison.
Fun Fact: This particular cultivar was developed relatively near to me, by those zany plant scientists at the University of British Columbia.
