Long-Eared Holly Fern, Asian Sabre Fern
Polystichum neolobatum
Type: Evergreen Fern
Exposure: Partial to Full Shade
Water: Regular

This Asian native will form a clump of delicate-looking fronds that will reach 2ft (60cm) tall by 30in (75cm) wide. The fronds are quite stiff and are strongly upright, arching only slightly compared to its cousin, the Sword Fern. This works well in a shady foliage display where the glossy, dark green, leathery foliage can contrast with other shade lovers, such as Brunneras and Hostas. The leaves are a pale green on the undersides. Although an evergreen, these ferns look better if cut to the ground in late winter before the new foliage emerges.

Fun Fact: The Long-Eared part of the common name refers to the leaflets closest to the mid-rib of each frond (see first photo) being larger than the others and resembling an elongated ear, although you might have to use your imagination a bit for that one…

Cheers,

John
