Viburnum rhytidophyllum
Type: Evergreen Shrub
Exposure: Sun / Part Shade
Water: Regular

This evergreen viburnum is grown primarily for its dramatic foliage. Each leaf is a glossy, dark green, heavily textured oval, which can reach up to 8in (20cm) long. This rough, deeply veined texture is what gives the leatherleaf viburnum its name. They are a lighter color (and sort of felty) underneath, and are held by fuzzy brown stems. Domed clusters of fragrant, creamy-white blooms in the spring result in clusters of oval fruit in the fall, which starts out red (sometimes blue) before maturing to black. While the plant seems to enjoy some shade, it tends to bloom better in full sun. A vigorous but non-invasive grower, leatherleaf viburnum can reach 15ft (4.5m) high and wide in maturity. It’s at its best when situated near plants with finely cut or otherwise contrasting foliage so it can show off its bold texture.
