Here’s one of those rare plants that does double duty as a food source and an ornamental shrub. Growing from 6 to 10ft (1.8-3m) high and wide, it is called a “highbush” blueberry. In springtime, white blossoms emerge from pink buds, followed by delicious blue fruit in summer. The oval, glossy green leaves turn a showy wine red color in autumn that is long lasting, thanks to their reluctance to fall. When they finally do, they reveal branches that are twisted with peeling bark. These do best with some shelter from drying winds and some afternoon shade, so it’s well suited to a woodland style of garden.

Cheers,

John
