Monkshood

Aconitum carmichaelii “Arendsii”

Monkshood
Aconitum carmichaelii “Arendsii”
Type: Perennial
Exposure: Sun / Part Shade
Water: Regular

This delphinium relative grows to 4ft (1.2m) and nearly as wide on leafy stems that are sturdy enough that they often won’t require staking. The dense foliage is leathery but glossy, with each leaf being divided into 3-5 lobes. They tend to curl slightly also, and for some reason this makes them look even fancier (I’m not sure why). Bluish-mauve buds give rise to handsome, vivid azure flowers in early to mid-autumn. These are held in dense branching clusters, each of which can reach 8in (20cm) long. The upper part of the blooms develops into a unique helmet-like shape, similar to the hoods worn by medieval monks.

Pro Tip: These are toxic if eaten. Please resist the urge to chow down on your Monkshood.

Cheers,

John
