Matilija Poppy, California Tree Poppy
Romneya Coulteri
Type: Perennial
Exposure: Full Sun
Water: Regular, Drought tolerant once established.
This spectacular perennial produces large (to 8in or 20cm) wide blossoms atop greyish-green stems that grow to 6-8ft (1.8-2.4m) or higher. The blooms themselves, which are sometimes compared to a fried egg, consist of a center of yellow stamens surrounded by five or six crepe paper-like petals, which begin in late spring, and have been known to last through the summer into early fall. Romneyas will form a large clump, but also spread by rhizomes, so give these guys lots of room. They are sometimes used as a bank cover as a result of their spreading habit.
