Balloon Flower
Platycodon grandiflorus “Maresii”
Type: Perennial
Exposure: Sun / Light Shade
Water: Regular

This reliable summer bloomer forms a clump of fresh-looking light green leaves 2ft (60cm) wide. The name “Balloon Flower” refers to the buds on 18in (45cm) upright stalks that inflate before opening, which look like purple balloons. When they do open, they form 2in (5cm) 5-pointed, lavender-blue stars with deeper purple veins. The blooms begin in mid-summer and will continue for 2 months or more. White, pink and double-flowered varieties are also available.

Balloon Flowers die back completely in the fall, and don’t reappear until later in the spring, so make sure that you mark their location so you don’t dig them up accidentally.

Cheers,

John
