Sneezeweed
Helenium Autumnale “Moerheim Beauty”
Type: Perennial
Exposure: Full Sun
Water: Regular
Today’s plant has some similarities to Black-Eyed Susans (stay tuned!), in that they are sort of daisy / coneflower shaped, they supply a splash of color in the late summer and into the fall, and they combine well with ornamental grasses as well as each other. Sneezeweed, so named because its dried leaves used to be used in the manufacture of snuff, will form clumps of medium green leaves that will mature to 2ft (60cm) across. Leafy flower stalks to 3ft (90cm) high produce bright, coppery-orange / red blossoms that will reach 3in (7.5cm) in diameter. The center cones are dark brown in color, accented with tiny dots of yellow. Great as a cut flower.
Fun Fact: These are named after Helen of Troy. Maybe she used snuff…
Cheers,
John
