Aucuba japonica “Gold Stem”
Type: Evergreen shrub
Exposure: Shade
Water: Regular
This variegated shrub is a popular addition to many gardens due to its glossy, green-splotched-with-yellow evergreen foliage and its ability to tolerate full shade. Insignificant flowers appear in the spring, which are then followed by berries which ripen to scarlet and remain with the plant to add to the show during the winter (They only produce fruit if both a male and female plant are present). Aucubas will grow to 6-8ft (1.8-2.4m) tall and wide, but can be kept smaller by pruning, and are well suited to grow in a container in the shade. Many varieties, including dwarfs and green-leafed types are available.
Fun Fact: Although quite shade tolerant, Aucuba’s coloring is more pronounced in brighter spots (lighter shade).
