Paperbark Maple

Acer Griseum

Paperbark Maple
Acer Griseum
Type: Deciduous Tree
Exposure: Sun / Part Shade
Water: Regular

This decorative tree which is native to China can reach 25ft (7.5m) high over time with equal spread, although  its width tends to vary; sometimes it only gets half that wide. The leaves, which are quite late to open in springtime, consist of 3-toothed lobes that are darkish-green above and a lighter, silvery green underneath. Tiny red flowers in spring ripen to 2-winged samaras in the fall, which are the familiar winged seed pods that helicopter the seeds away from the tree when they fall. These are accompanied by a brilliant show of bronzy-red foliage before the leaves fall in winter. When they do, they reveal the handsome, paper thin, cinnamon-colored bark which peels from the trunk and branches, providing winter interest and the common name.

Cheers,

John
