Cyclamen hederifolium |
Persian Violet, Hardy Fall Cyclamen
Cyclamen hederifolium
Type: Perennial
Exposure: Full/ Part Shade
Water: Regular
This native of Turkey grows from corms (similar to a bulb) to form a plant 6in (15cm) high by twice as wide. Fall cyclamen blooms profusely, before the leaves, in late summer or early fall. These flowers are about 2in (5cm) long with pink or pinkish-white petals that are swept back from a darker-colored eye. Each flower stem holds only one flower. When they do arrive, the leaves are ivy-shaped with silver markings. They persist through the winter, die back in late spring, then remain dormant throughout the summer, so keep track of where they’re planted. They might self sow, which can be a good thing, as they are particularly effective in mass plantings.
