This native of Eastern North America forms a clump of coarse but finely-toothed foliage that can eventually reach 3ft (90cm) high and wide on square stems. This foliage is aromatic with a fragrance that’s described as being a fresh combination of mint and basil. The flowers appear in mid-summer, and are composed of tightly-packed tubular petals that form a rather disorganized-looking, bright red mess of color. Adding to the show is a whorl of reddish leaf bracts situated right under the blooms. The blooms are long lasting, especially if deadheaded, persisting into late summer or early fall. This one’s a butterfly magnet; birds like it too. Use it in borders, wild plantings or cottage garden schemes.

Cheers,

John
