Hairy Loosestrife
Lysimachia ciliata “Firecracker”
Type: Perennial
Exposure: Sun / Part Shade
Water: Regular
Despite its rather unfortunate common name, hairy loosestrife is a strikingly beautiful plant. Burgundy to chocolate-colored foliage forms a mound to 4ft (1.2m) tall by half as wide. It’s a vigorous grower, but is not considered potentially invasive like some others in the lysimachia group (see Creeping Jenny, May 3rd). The nodding, mid summer, star-shaped flowers are about an inch (2.5cm) across, and provide a striking contrast with the dark foliage. They occur singly or in loose clusters. These work well in a woodland setting, near a water feature, or as an accent plant in a border.
