Chilean Potato Vine
Solanum crispum “Glasnevin”
Type: Semi-evergreen Shrubby Vine
Exposure: Full Sun
Water: Regular
As suggested in the name, this vigorous climber is native to Chile. Reaching 20ft (6m) tall and 6ft (1.8m) wide in maturity, it requires some support from a fence or trellis to keep it from sprawling. The lance-shaped, sometimes wavy-edged soft green leaves will stay with the plant in all but the nastiest winters. This variety flowers abundantly, producing 4in (10cm) clusters of star-shaped fragrant blooms, each with a bright yellow center which contrasts vividly with the lilac-purple petals that surrounds it. These begin in mid summer, and persist into autumn. Small green berries forms after the flowers fade, which turns to yellowish-orange and finally to purple as it matures. Don’t eat it; you’ll get sick. Situate this one against a sturdy support in a sunny, sheltered spot for best results.
Cheers,
John
