Angel’s Trumpet

Brugmansia

Angel’s Trumpet
Brugmansia
Type: Annual
Exposure: Sun or Light Shade
Water: Regular

In warmer climates, such as their native South America, these plants are evergreen or semi-evergreen large shrubs. Here in the Pacific Northwest, they are treated as big, tropical-looking annuals. Growing to 12ft (3.6 m) high by 7ft (2.1m) wide around here, these bold, unique-looking plants quickly establish themselves as a focal point in any garden.  The luxuriously large leaves can reach 1ft (30cm) long by 7in (18cm) wide in some cultivars, but the flowers are definitely the main attraction. These can be huge (to 15in or 38cm) in some species, but are more commonly seen in the 8-12in (20-30cm) range, with a variety of colors available ranging between white and red. They are trumpet-shaped, fragrant (except for b. sanguinea), and point towards the ground. Best in a location sheltered from the wind.

Handy Hint! You can overwinter your brugmansia indoors if you plant it in a large container. Bring it indoors when minimum temperatures reach 50F (10C). Water it about once a month while indoors.

Also, all parts of the plant contains toxins or alkaloids which can cause terrifying hallucinations, so please…don’t eat your brugmansia.

Cheers,

John
