Stachys Byzantina
Type: Evergreen or Semi-Evergreen Perennial
Exposure: Sun / Part Shade
Water: Regular to Drought Tolerant Once Established
This popular perennial will spread by rooting stems to form a low clump of leafy rosettes to 2ft (60cm) across. The leaves themselves are covered with a luxuriously soft, silvery-white felt and will get about 4in (10cm) long. In early summer, fuzzy flower spikes with small magenta flowers rise to 18in (45cm) above the foliage. However, because this is grown primarily for its unique foliage, these spikes are often removed to keep the plant compact. (I quite like them, though). This is a great plant for a child’s garden, being easy to grow, and fun to touch. Also, the furry leaf texture means that they’re usually left alone by deer.
Cheers,
John
